What Should a Construction Site Safety Inspection Cover?
Start with the big risks
Construction site safety inspections should focus on the hazards most likely to cause harm. On most sites these include working at height, moving plant, excavations, temporary works and site traffic. An inspection does not need to cover every item every time, but it should be proportionate to the work in progress.
Look at controls, not just hazards
Identifying a hazard is only useful if you assess whether the existing controls are adequate. Are guardrails in place? Are exclusion zones respected? Is PPE being worn correctly? Is plant operated by trained and authorised people? Good inspections test whether your risk assessments are actually working on site.
Record findings and assign actions
The value of an inspection is in the follow-through. Record what you found, who is responsible for fixing it and when it needs to be closed out. Photographs help site managers understand the issue quickly and provide evidence of improvement over time.
