RAMS: What Construction Companies Need to Know
What RAMS stands for
RAMS stands for Risk Assessments and Method Statements. Together they describe the hazards of a task, who might be harmed, and how the work will be carried out safely. They are a key part of planning and controlling construction work.
Risk assessments must be suitable and sufficient
A good risk assessment is proportionate to the activity. It should identify the significant hazards, the people at risk, and the controls required. Generic risk assessments that are not reviewed against the actual site and task are rarely adequate.
Method statements should reflect real site activity
A method statement sets out the sequence of work, the resources needed, and the controls to be followed. It should be written so that the people doing the work can understand and follow it. If the method statement does not match what happens on site, it needs to be revised.
Thames Gateway Health & Safety provides practical RAMS reviews for construction businesses across Essex and London. We check that your paperwork is suitable, sufficient and aligned with the way the work will actually be carried out.
