Construction Health & Safety: A Practical Guide for Small Contractors

    30 August 2026 7 min read

    Keep it proportionate

Health and safety does not need to be complicated. A small contractor with straightforward, low-risk work needs simpler arrangements than a large principal contractor. Focus on the real hazards on your sites.

    Get the basics right

Make sure you have a written health and safety policy if you employ five or more people, access to competent advice, risk assessments for your work, and a system for reporting incidents and near misses.

    Involve your workers

Consult your workers on health and safety matters. They are often the best source of information on what the real risks are and whether your controls are working.

Get help when you need it

If you do not have the expertise in-house, use a competent construction H&S consultant. This is usually more cost-effective than employing a full-time H&S manager and gives you access to specialist advice when you need it.

Thames Gateway Health & Safety supports small and growing contractors across Essex and London with practical, flexible health and safety consultancy.
